If you’ve ever read the moderators on any of Gajin’s message boards or on their Facebook page for War Thunder, you would know that they seem to have a pretty good sense of humour. I can only assume that this extends to the rest of the team because for this April 1st the team behind War Thunder announced a modern addition to the series with new Level IX vehicles and aircraft.
But is it really April Fools?
I have to say that I’m not entirely sure if this is an April fools prank or an actual product announcement. It is possible that it is a bit of both.
So far the developer blog has released a series of updates on the new vehicles and aircraft including the Leopard 2A5, T-90A, Mi-35, and a trademark free AH-64 Apache (named GM-64 Chieftan). There is even a new Middle East battleground to accommodate these modern vehicles.
This all seems to be a very elaborate April Fools prank with some fancy marketing materials and that was it – but it isn’t it because you can log in and play the thing right now.
Watch Bo Time play through with some T-90A gameplay and even a little bit in the choppers.
Modern aircraft? Is this real?
From the announcement they make it sound like jets are part of future plans.
Based on War Thunder’s expanded research trees, we’ll begin to introduce air combat and armoured vehicles up to rank IX. The top vehicles at this rank will include well-known machines of mass destruction, like the M1A2 Abrams, Т-14 “Armata”, F-22 Raptor, Т-50 PАК FА and many more.
So the real question then is: Is all of this real? I really don’t know. If we look back at the April fools prank that Gajin did last year with the pirate ship as a guide then that initial prank was just a taster of a more fully featured ship based combat that they ended up announcing later.
This could be a prank that disappears after the weekend is over but it may also be a whole new War Thunder experience. Some modern jets in War Thunder would be interesting… cue up the inevitable debates between battle ratings of F-4 Phantoms and MiG-21 “Fishbeds”.
